Honolulu, Hi
The plates and bowls were in the kitchen for as long as I an remember. Dinner plates, bowls, casseroles, sugar bowl. My mom, dad and I would use them just about every day of the year. They were simple in design. Stone color in the middle with the rim taking on a dark green shade.
Years go by. Mom passes away. It's just me and Dad. Then Dad has a stroke and I'm by myself. I get married and "life" starts anew in the same house I grew up in. And those old plates I used as a kid were part of our family again. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Time to buy new plates! And more stuff accumulates over the years. Time for a garage sale.
Let's sell grandma's old plates. We don't use them much and the set is incomplete anyway. If we can get 25 cents for one of each, that'll be good. We've got these new plates after all.
So the garage sale opens. And a lady in her 70s comes walking through and sees these old plates and bowls and says "It's a Heath! You must have just bought these or they've been in your family for a while."
"Umm, yeah. My Mom bought them probably 40 years ago." It's a Heath. She said it with such reverence. This is the real thing, kid. Do you know what you have here? A Cadillac. 24k Gold.
Evidently, we didn't know. Out of my ignorance, we sold the plates. The Heath stuff that's been in our cupboard for decades. Had I known, we would still have the Heath in our house today. Had I known, we would have taken better care of the set my Mom bought who knows when, all those years ago.
We made a mistake. One that will never happen again should we be so fortunate to have Heath in our house again. Now that we've rediscovered Heath, it's a favored brand of ours. Love the designs, love the attention to craftsmanship, love the Heath history. Next time we have an opportunity, we're adding Heath to our home.
